In America and Canada and other countries a prom is supposed to be the first formal occasion that young men and women attend, as well as a celebration of their last year of study. Back in the nineteen fifties it was expected that the gown was either full-length or just knee-length or perhaps calf-length, but certainly not almost mini-length, simply because it was a formal occasion after all. Dresses were approved that could be worn as later-evening or -night wear which meant they could be kept for a cocktail party or a ball later on. Some were even, if the family was frugal, altered and became perfect for a wedding or a very social ball in the higher echelons of society.

These days you can have a dress that is rather short by those old-day standards and of brilliant colours which were not really accepted at that time. It was also very much in style to wear gloves and a tiny corsage pinned on the bosom of the dress, not as an accessory around the wrist The gloves have all but disappeared, although they have been slowly making a come-back with full-length gowns, and the corsage has migrated to the wrist, these young ladies are very stylish and beautiful to look at.

Prom dress gowns nowadays can be strapless, one-sleeved, have a train or not, and as previously mentioned, nearly mini-length depending on what is in style for prom dress fashions. Once the preferred material choices for prom gowns was satin or silk, and for prom dresses chiffon, nowadays the choice is much wider with synthetic materials and combinations of natural and man-made material as are the colours, so the girls look like brilliantly coloured birds when they are dancing.
